A pillow is a large cushion support for the head, usually used while sleeping in a bed or the body as used on a sofa or chair. There are also cushions (also called pads), which are pillows that are purely decorative and not intended to support or comfort. Outside the U.S. generally regarded as a type of mattress, pillow term reserved for pillows on a bed.

Internally, a pillow with a foam package, full synthetic, feathers, or down. Traditionally straw was a filler, but it is uncomfortable and rarely used today. Feathers and down are the most expensive and usually the most comfortable, offering the advantage of softness and ability to adapt to the shape desired by the user, instead of foam or fiber pillows. One of the drawbacks of a feather pillow is that a significant number of people are allergic to them. There are a number of pillows hypoallergenic for sensitive people down to enjoy the comfort of feather o

The filling is surrounded by a shell, or carapace of cloth or silk, known as a pillow or pillowcase. Some pillows have a stylish clamshell called a farce, which is closed on all sides and usually has a slit in the back through which you place the pillow. Rectangular bed pillow covers usually do not have zippers, but they have an open page all the time. It is recommended that all types of pillow covers to be washed regularly, as this is the part that is in contact with the body of a person. But even with regular washing, pillows tend to accumulate large quantities of dust and large numbers of microbes among the fill and it is recommended that they be replaced every year, especially for those with allergies.

Orthopedic

Neck pillows support the neck by providing a deep area for the head to rest and a supportive area to keep your neck in alignment with the spine while sleeping. These may also be known as cervical pillows.

Travel pillows provide support for neck and head in a sitting position. Their "U" shape fits around the neck and the head slips into an uncomfortable and possibly harmful position during sleep. But can U-shaped pillows sometimes force the head forwards creating neck stiffness. They may also be known as a Bucky pillow.

These pillows are generally used to support lower back while driving or sitting, as in an office chair. Orthopaedic pillows resemble Memory foam pillows.

Decorative

Decorative pillows serve a dual purpose. They would have fancy cover material which serves to decorate the room in which they exist. Since Decorative Textiles are commonly 54 inches in width, many decorative pillows finish about 17x17 inches. (54 / 3 = 18 less seam allowance) when used to decorate a fully made up bed, decorative pillows are likely thrown aside at bedtime, since they are not covered with a laundrable pillowcases hence also found on the bed, they are primarily for decoration, and thus they fall under this category.

Decorative pillows are also found on furnishings in more public parts of the home, such as sofas, chairs and window seats. Here, their shared overlap both orthopedic and bed pillows. For example, if a person has some particular medical condition, they will probably use a handy decorative pillow for lumbar support, as needed, while seated on a sofa. Even after the occasional nap, decorative pillows are handy for supporting the head or neck, although they are not covered with a pillow case which are bed pillows.

There are five common synonyms for decorative pillows which are descriptive of their use in the home. "Accent" Pillows emphasize or accent the second part of home decor. The terms Sofa Pillow and Couch Pillow refer to the place these decorative pillows are likely found. The terms Toss pillow and throw pillow refer to the way they generally come to their seats.

New cushions are shaped like humorous objects (a banana, tweety bird, a human leg, a former president), and aims to make up and add humor to a room or lounge area.

Floor Pillows are another subset of decorative pillows. These pillows often finish 26x26 inches (half the width of the textile, less seam allowance)
